The Moving Chains project, created by renowned artist Charles Gaines, is a 110-foot-long kinetic sculpture that confronts the narrative of America’s origins, revealing the omissions and distorted truths that have perpetuated white supremacy. The artwork, made of steel and Sapele, a tree native to West Africa, is positioned facing the Statue of Liberty and emphasizes how the U.S. political and economic systems continue to uphold the legacy of slavery.
I had the honor of being the photographer at the inaugural event of this impressive artwork, capturing key moments of an installation that invites reflection on history and its contemporary implications. Below are some of the images documenting this significant event.
